High in the mist-draped highlands of Uraga, deep in Ethiopia's Guji Zone, coffee doesn't just grow — it thrives. At elevations between 2,100 and 2,200 meters, the Hambela Washing Station works with a dedicated network of smallholder farmers cultivating traditional heirloom varieties in a lush, semi-forest environment that is as wild as it is carefully tended. This is one of Ethiopia's most storied coffee regions, where ancient varietals, fertile volcanic soils, and cool mountain air conspire to slow the ripening of each cherry to an almost meditative pace — coaxing out layers of sweetness and complexity that roasters around the world seek out year after year. The partnership between Kuri Mountain Coffee and its out-grower community goes beyond the harvest: farmers receive ongoing training and technical support, and only cherries meeting strict quality standards make it into this G1 lot. The result is a coffee with a real sense of place — and of people.

After hand-picking at peak ripeness between October and January, the choicest cherries were laid whole onto raised African drying beds and left to bask and breathe under the Guji sun for roughly three weeks. This is the natural process — Ethiopia's oldest coffee tradition — and here it's executed with the kind of patience and precision that separates a great natural from a merely good one. Skilled workers turned and sorted the drying cherries continuously, pulling out any under-ripe fruit before it could compromise the lot. That slow, careful drying is everything: as the cherry skin gradually dries around the bean, the fruit's sugars and aromatics are drawn inward, building body, sweetness, and an almost intoxicating fruit intensity that washed coffees simply can't replicate.

Pour a light roast of this Guji Hambela and you're rewarded with a cup that feels both exuberant and refined. Expect a cascade of blueberry and raspberry up front — vivid, jammy, unmistakably Ethiopian — followed by the lush tropical drift of papaya and the delicate floral tang of hibiscus. A tart brightness lifts everything, keeping the sweetness lively rather than cloying. We strongly recommend a light roast to preserve every nuance this high-altitude terroir has to offer: think first crack finish, allowing the origin character to speak clearly. It sings as a pour-over or Chemex, and cold brew fans will find the fruit notes bloom beautifully over ice.
